Community Planting for Biodiversity enhancement at Ozone Reserve with
GHD 14th June 2008
In perfect weather staff and family from GHD assisted CBCG members to
plant over 1,600 plants at Ozone Reserve on Saturday 14th June.
Our members recognised the biodiversity value of the parks at the eastern
end of the city when we surveyed the parks last year for our Biodiversity
Study (see June 2007 journal).
We were keen to add some understorey plantings to the area and also
replant a section of sedges near Lake Vasto. GHD and City of Perth staff
offered their technical expertise in selecting appropriate plants and also
provided volunteers to help our members on the planting day. Our thanks to
the City of Perth for sponsoring this planting.

Cecily and Rada sort out the plants

Everyone gathered around while Rada demonstrated how to give each plant
the best start in life.

Then it was down on our knees and planting.

Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi was delighted to see the work being undertaken
by community volunteers in a city park.
Working Bee at Robertson Park 7th June 2008
In lovely winter sun we tackled the weeds which have grown up following
the rain.
A pair of Maned Geese (aka Wood Ducks) were in the lake and also foraging
on the grass. The male has a glossy reddish brown head and distinctive
markings. The female's colour is similar but less marked (paler)

The new development on Stuart St is almost finished.

Rada and Daniel tested the water quality, which was fresh, phosphate
level OK, but turbid and quite acidic at pH 5.
Robertson Park Annual Planting May 2008
With the coming of winter rain, our members gathered to plant several
hundred plants around the wetland. Sedges (Ficninea nodosa) were
planted in the damp soil edging the mid-winter water line and various small
shrubs and groundcovers were planted throughout including the native iris
Patersonia occidentalis, many-flowered fringed lily Thysanotus
multiflorus, groundcovers Hemiandra pungens and Kennedia prostrata,
small shrubs including Petrophile heterophylla, Gompholobium
tomentosum and Dryandra nivea. All of these plants are suitable
for home gardens. Our thanks to Ian Ellies from the Town of Vincent for
providing the plants.

We also found mushrooms growing under the thicket of spearwood (Kunzea
ericifolia) and flooded gums (Eucalyptus rudis)

Local Plant Sale - Town of Vincent April 2008

CBCG members assisted at a Local Plant sale at the Town of Vincent on
19 April. Jenny Hopwood will be coordinating our group's involvement in
these sales in future so if you'd like to assist, please call or email and
we'll put you in touch with Jenny. The next Plant Sale is on 23rd August
2008.
Lots of rain at Robertson Park on 5th April 2008

The creek was flowing strongly at our working bee on Saturday 5th
April. Chris waded in to remove litter and material trapped by the sedges
(the vegetation in the creek channel catches litter and sediment,
filtering the water before it flows into the wetland (below).

We noticed a Pungura in flower (Swamp banksia: Banksia littoralis)
Below is a mature Pungura in bush near Pinjarra to give an idea of how
tall they are at maturity.

After enjoying the rain, some of us gathered at a nearby home and sowed 8
trays of seeds.
